Amusing Comeuppance for Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst is known in part for his appropriation of images from other artists. So the coolpublic (newspeak I invented) and a bunch of the art world were nonplussed when he sued a 16 year old artist named Cartrain for using images of his diamond encrusted skull work entitled For the Love of God (shown below) integrated into works in his portfolio.

I can imagine British web 2.0 denizens thinking "Jings, what a tosser!" or perhaps "Stone the crows, he's a bleeding nonce!" after determining that the indescribably wealthy (he sold an entire show at Sotheby's) pot has in fact called the aspiring 16 year old kettle black.

Now a group known as redragtoabull has done a wonderful thing - they have decided to deliberately appropriate the skull image and deliberately use it in a series of compositions in hope of inciting dialogue......or worse/better. Here's a statement from their site:

"All of the works below are for sale and once TWENTY MILLION POUNDS has been raised ALL the proceeds will go to make an exact copy of a sculpture known as "For the Love of God". This will then be sold for FIFTY MILLION POUNDS and the THIRTY MILLION POUND profit will then be used to repay the Street Urchin his 200 quid, help other Street Urchins and also feed starving children in Africa and Sussex."

One of the artists is Jamie Reid who "designed 90% of the Sex Pistols LP and poster imagery" as he so vitriolically and justifiably pointed out in comments to a punk action slideshow post at PCL Link Dump

ha-HA! Striking a blow for fair play and commentary by society at large!! Art Heroes! David slaying Goliath with color and design!

The works are clever, funny, appealing and thought provoking, both message wise and process wise.

Both pix link to redragtoabull...... where one can view them as well as submit.

Oooh! Submit!

If I Only Had A Brain - Lyrics

Brain/No Brain......you decide......

I could wile away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers
Consultin' with the rain
And my head I'd be scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain

I'd unravel any riddle
For any individ'le
In trouble or in pain

Oh, I would tell you why
The ocean's near the shore
I could think of things I never thunk before
And then I'd sit and think some more

I would not be just a nuffin'
My head all full of stuffin'
My heart all full of pain
I would dance and be merry
Life would be a ding-a-derry
If I only had a brain

Emmett Till

I heard The Ballad of Emmett Till via Never Get Out of the Boat

and I was curious who he was. When I looked up the Wikipedia entry I was disgusted by the horror of it all. In short it's about a barn full of goddamned devils torturing and beating a 14 year old not just to death but way past it. It shook me up.

While we have come a long way, this happened not that long ago, and all people have to continue strive to understand each other. In my opinion, there's no better place to nurture that understanding than America where the country is not based on religion, not based on ethnicity and if you become an American it's not some conditional existence, because your father never buried an axe in the head of say, a Burgundian or Ostrogoth 400 years ago. You're an American. I'm not saying America is better than anywhere else, it's just that we're neck deep in diversity whether the godamned devils like it or not.

Yeah, go ahead complain about our imperfections, (I often do) because you can, but remember it's through understanding that we grow.

The Fall

The Fall: Saw it Saturday night. I really wasn't expecting much, probably owing to the film's lack of market presence, which is stupid on my part.

The images are exquisite, with more than a nod to Dali. While I'm not a person who actively seeks films where fantasy and reality intertwine, this one got me because the intertwining was illustrative of how we visualize oral narrative. Especially in the case of children. In short, fairytale B.S. eludes me most times - but this wasn't that.

The little girl in the film Alexandria, played Catinca Untaru captivates because she plays her part like she's in a documentary thereby widening the gap between fantasy and reality. Lee Pace holds his own with her, as if they are interacting in life and not on film.

It'll tear you up in parts. And put you back together in others. All through it I could not understand why it was not more celebrated.

Here are two clips and the trailer:

I Am So F***ing Buying an Electric Guitar!

One of my fave live bands, Nashville Pussy, teach how to play guitar. Blaine and Ruyter teach all the secrets of the "no brown M&Ms" crowd.

Just to prove they can put their money where their NSFW mouths are:

Let the lessons commence. See you on stage.
