Saucy Acupressure for the Modern Swinger from 1974

J. V. Cerney's Acupuncture Without Needles (1974) actually is rife with good advice. The real interest in this book, however, are the creepalicious illustrations that accompany the descriptions of how to cure ailments. I picture a guy who bought this book in a smoking jacket and with a combover saying, My dear, you have amenorrhea? Lie down....I can help!"

Further adding to the weirdness is the fact that Dr. Cerney is the one who executed the illustrations........!

In Russia, Chocolate Eats You !!

I was in Queens a few months ago & brought this reasonably delicious chocolate home for my kids. I just never got around to the public savoring of the "ASTONISHED BABY"..... or "baby in awe".... or "Gimme that chocolate, Uncle Pyotr!!"

Louisiana in 48 Hours

My daughter made me a going away card.....

uh.....she'll be - um, 15 in September....

On another flying note all I can say is:

Oh dear GHOD!!!

Moving on, I got these great pix of a Cajun oil change king in Metairie -

Katrina didn't kick his ass!!

The Superdome- looking poetically like a nuke plant,

and hauntingly ambient

when you're there, it hits you - thousands and thousands of people - our car would have been completely submerged - the overpasses that run right by full with evacuees. It had to be some first class horror.

I went a little nuts & bought a case of Blue Runner Creole Cream Style Beans - now I'm set for a while. The folks in Gonzales want 12 bucks just for shipping on 6 cans.

.....but I got some top quality service at Zuppardo's Economical Market. They were really helpful. Then, the TSA got their hands on 'em:

I'm sure these beans will cause some kind of explosion, just not the one they were looking out for.

Thanks for all the Gigolo Aunts...............................

Trip to heave and ho, up down, to and fro'
You have no word
Trip, trip to a dream dragon
Hide your wings in a ghost tower
Sails cackling at every plate we break
Cracked by scattered needles
The little minute gong
Coughs and clears his throat
Madam you see before you stand
Hey ho, never be still
The old original favorite grand
Grasshoppers green Herbarian band
And the tune they play is "In Us Confide"
So trip to heave and ho, up down, to and fro'
You have no word
Please leave us here
Close our eyes to the octopus ride!
Isn't it good to be lost in the wood
Isn't it bad so quiet there, in the wood
Meant even less to me than I thought
With a honey plough of yellow prickly seeds
Clover honey pots and mystic shining feed...
Well, the madcap laughed at the man on the border
Hey ho, huff the Talbot
"Cheat" he cried shouting kangaroo
It's true in their tree they cried
Please leave us here
Close our eyes to the octopus ride!
The madcap laughed at the man on the border
Hey ho, huff the Talbot
The winds they blew and the leaves did wag
They'll never put me in their bag
The seas will reach and always seep
So high you go, so low you creep
The wind it blows in tropical heat
The drones they throng on mossy seats
The squeaking door will always squeak
Two up, two down we'll never meet
So merrily trip forgo my side
Please leave us here
Close our eyes to the octopus ride!

Hot Dog on a Hamburg Bun -Crazy Innovation While Working From Home

Editing some video for work & my wife made me this:

Hot Dog - now get this - on a Hamburg Bun!!! The creative juices were flowing at our house today, boy...
Presentation being everything, the accompanying Mac n'Cheese (w/Tabasco, of course) is Spongebob:

L to R: Gary, Spongebob, Patrick, Squidward
and Cherries for dessert:

I hope the milk content in the Mac n' Cheese doesn't render them POISONOUS.

MMMM.... Here's Some Yams For You!

I shot these Yams while the box was lying in a dumpster. The imagery was compelling. I can't explain why I like what I like. The picture is a link to a cool 1024x768 DESKTOP WALLPAPER!!
You're welcome!

Boody Rogers' Sparky Watts from 1948 in Big Shot Comics

Boody Rogers had a swingin' style and a bent towards insane characters. His work shows up in a lot of places but he remains largely unknown. I included the cover to Big Shot Comics as well as a cool ad from the back.
Here's the files in a sequence of web pages:

Ah done come up with a low-go

Hey I've been using the teeny-tiny barcode as an indiscriminate "home" link, sometimes back to here and sometimes to the Glyphjockey home page. But now I can differentiate & while the UPC was a rich-in-irony glyph, this is more directly a glyph as it is a mark left by a mason on one of the stones of St. Andrews cathedral ruins in Scotland. So, when you see the little "b" it's to back here, & without it it's to the Home Page

Peeni Walli

I debated doing this post, but being an avid cyclist and having fallen off a bicycle at 18-20 mph I can relate to, yet enjoy the song "Peeni Walli" by Eek-A-Mouse . But more importantly it taught me a new term : Peeni Walli. Jamaican for Firefly - I guess they look different than ours- but today when this one landed on the curtains in front of me, I took it as a sign to post. Special treat at the above photo link - sing along, Beddameng!

EEK A MOUSE lyrics

A Not Quite Web 2.0 Exercise - DECALS!

I was looking at Big Daddy Roth stuff on eBay and ran across some decals - so stream of conciousnessly I moved on to decals. I loved water decals - their tacky membrane activated by water sliding satisfyingly onto glass - becoming integrated with whatever it was applied to. Add to that the wrongness of design and you've got the key to adulthood (at least to my juvenile brain).

Since I use Firefox with tabbed browsing I had opened a bunch of pages with individual listings on them. Then it hit me - I asked myself, "What am I gonna put any of these decals on?" at that point I realized I could virtually have them by virtue of capturing the images and building a slide show. So I did, & here it is. It contains basically unedited images found on eBay under the search "Water Decal"

A "Trip" to Baltimore Library

Went to Baltimore Library at 400 Cathedral Street. When I saw the venerable edifice in the home of H.L. Mencken and John Waters I decided to whip out the old Samsung SGH T309 and phone cam it. As soon as I stepped inside, a Library Policewoman (?) informed that if I wanted to take pictures of the building I had to "check in at information and get cleared to do so".

Yeah right:
Baltimore Library

What am I: William Nuthead? (as shown in this shot of wall paintings honoring famous Marylanders inside the library)

Of course not- America is still free as are its libraries and I will continue to photograph them without "checking in". Indeed.....

New Zealand Birds

I bought this copy of New Zealand Birds and How to Identify Them in St. Andrews, Scotland 16 years ago. Given a as a gift to William Borg-Watson from sergeant J. R. Simonsen in November 1943. Wishing a peaceful New Year. The book's official dedication is to "The Children of New Zealand". The picture's a link to the color plates which compelled me to make this L1.80 purchase. Also I guess some wishful thinking about seeing NZ one day.

My Monkey Ends With a Tail - Er, I Mean, My Tale Ends With a Monkee

Went to L.A. for one day - got a room in Chinatown. Swam at Santa Monica and spent time at Little Tokyo - that was enough for me to want to move there.

On the way home Mickey Dolenz

of the Monkees offered me a blanket.

Sing with me now:

There he was;
Sittin' on the plane;
Offerin' me a Blan-ket;
It was quite insane!
Hey hey he's a Monkee,
With a sport coat and James Bond hat;
ridin to the Midwest;
What do you make of that?

Anyway, I put all my phonecam photos together as the below slideshow - it's short but groovy:

How to drown during a water landing

I was flying on NWA this week and while reading the safety sheet I noticed that during a water landing a certain step was missing and it was so important that I felt the need to point it out with a comic strip style layout. Follow along - to panic & horror.

Now you can't blame NWA - Ice cube, Dr. Dre et al should not be held reponsible, but the company that makes these sheets up for them needs to re-work 'em. Huh? And - as always the picture' a link!!

Desmond Dekker 7/16/41 - 5/25/06

Take your time, take time for the king is back
Take your time, you've got to know that the king is back
Take your time, beware, for he's right on top
Take your time, you've got to know that the king is back

Don't rush it, man, you will surely lose it
I am going to burn your skin like a blazing fire

So take your time, take time for the king is back
Take your time, you've got to know that the king is back
Take your time, beware, for he's right on top
Take your time, you've got to know that the king is back

I want you to know who's the king of the ska
The king of the ska is right here on top

Gumboot Chiton - Creepy Reminiscence

30 years ago I hitched out west. You could do that then - without getting killed by a maniac before leaving the county. I went to California and while there I camped at Andrew Molera State Park, which was a walk-in park on the Pacific in Big Sur: astounding beauty - eucalyptus trees scenting the breeze - ocean waves crashing on the beach in the distance while I slept.
I was walking the beach and being a young rascal, jumped the fence that blocked off a - get this - farm that ran down to the beach. I figured "hey the cattle aren't using it, why shouldn't I?"

The beach looked like this:

....only facing the other way.
When I got there I saw hundred of creatures scattered on the beach off into the distance.

They were each about 9" to 11" long, 6" to 8" wide. Oval, dome-shaped, like the top of a white person's head - but shaved. They were hard like a shoe or cantaloupe. They had tiny maroon spots in clusters that were not really that prominent -you had to look hard to see them -the bodies looked caucasian-flesh colored. Some light ambient ridging that went across the 6" to 8" axis on a few isolated specimens, but really just undifferentiated, hard, flesh colored domes - no holes, no eyes - nuthin'.. When turned over, they had a plate that covered the entire underside, in the same caucasian flesh color with a fringe of 1/2" long or less (mostly less) of opaque skin colored tentacles. There were hundreds of them - all not moving, not responding, some turning gray from what appeared to be death.

I wrote to an invertebrate biologist once and he said it was probably a jellyfish. I though, "hmmmmm an opaque, hard, large jellyfish with an underplate and tiny useless tentacles .... nah"

I figured this was the stuff of dreams. I've never seen one in a book, on TV or on the web. I've told dozens of people and turned to experts - nothing. When I got there it looked like hundreds of bald men buried up to their crowns.

I've had dreams often where I'm at the water side and some invertebrate encroaches upon my space. Having been at times in my life infested with house centipedes, yellow jackets, & bats - well, you can see where a guy might get a little creeped out.

So I wrote to Jim Woodring, and either he or his wife knew instantly. I almost wasn't surprised. But I remember a piece he did where he went fishing and sank his inflatable raft in a school of Rays and had to stab one to death - very visceral. Not to mention he cooks up some splendid animals that I would not want to encounter.

And they wrote back and said it was a gumboot chiton

This had plagued me for 30 years. Now I know. Thanks, Woodrings, thanks.

Andy Warhol - See Him Upon My Wall

Well, I told the Mrs. about my blog and instantly she reminded me that we had this book. The Best Children's Books - a 1958 collection by Doubleday. We bought it used (obviously) and when first leafing it through it years ago, I discovered that Warhol had done some of the illustrations. Check it out by clicking on the pic below:

Enjoy - early stuff - he made the right choice switching to soup cans. http://lex10.glyphjockey.com/2006/05/andy-warhol-see-him-upon-my-wall.html

History of Architecture & Ornament

Picture=LINK
I bought this book for 50 cents 15 years ago - I love the illustrations and have attempted a little archiving. They don't make books this nicely anymore: Marbled endpapers, red page edging, plate after plate in beautiful detail - and all for a correspondence course!
