Such a Cool post - I'm Nauseous and Reposting Here

Jet Harris was possibly the first person in Britain to own an electric bass guitar, and certainly the first to play one in a band. His original instrument was a Framus Star bass imported by Besson & Co from West Germany.

In September 1963, a chauffeur-driven limousine in which Jet was travelling with his girlfriend Billie Davis, was in collision with a Midland Red bus as they travelled back from one of Billie's shows in Evesham. The bus was written off in the accident and it was almost fatal for Jet too. Billie, who suffered a broken jaw in the accident, pulled the unconscious Jet from the wreckage of their car. He suffered serious head injuries requiring 34 stitches in the wound.

When the court case from the car crash was finally settled, in December 1966, Mr Justice Donaldson recognised that while Jet "was no Beatle and possibly no Cliff Richard, he was nevertheless at the top of his profession". Jet was awarded compensation of £11,150 - not much by today's standards but a not inconsiderable sum in 1966.

Archie Zeitgeist, Because I Have Learned to Share

This post is for my daughters, but it also has a connection to the vibrant, witty, and copiously post-laden I'm Learning to Share! hosted by The In Crowd. He bought some old Archies and immediately saw the value in their reflection of the culture of the times. My daughters, by contrast, just wanted the clothes. Having said that, instead of me scanning page after page in order to reassure myself that no matter how rich the content is, no one is reading this, I propose as an alternative that you scroll down 7,000 pixels or so, and check out these covers. They are, in fact, groovy. If you are jonesing for more, I suggest you go to Mr. In Crowd's rich and deep Flick'r set His thoughts on the whole subject can be found here

One final note, and I'll keep it short because too many words turn things off, is that mine were given to me free, by Bill of Frankenstein Comics. Frankenstein Comics is the best comic store in the world. While it caters expertly to jagovs who have to have the new X-Men, it also has piles and piles of crap comics that contain long lost advertising, themes that reflect forgotten morality, odd publishers long out of business, and more. Bill knows that this is my sole interest, and handed me a box saying, "Here, these are for you, they are missing covers, have pages torn out, are falling apart, and have been cut up, so don't complain, but they are my gift to you." That's where the covers come from. The last thing I'll say about Bill is he knows the history of comics, and not your garden variety Siegel and Shuster, Stan Lee, Bob Kane BS, but how one publisher started from a prison cell, artists who drank themselves to death, who is still drawing at 114 years old, why Gold Key had no ads, and every 1/4 cover seller's location on the Eastern Seaboard since 1967. Therefore, I could never give a dollar to a Member's Only jacketed douche with a copy of Previews in his face - only Bill.

More Punk Baseball for The WORLD SERIES!!

Working out how to best print these in preparation for sale....Backs will have a fave song lyric instead of stats. Teams and stuff like that is purely dictated by what I found searching vs. head size...
Also, there's a little "WTF?!?! moment at the bottom.
All cards link to the total collection page.

Enjoy!

and as so many bad interoffice joke emails say, "wait for it......"

Hey, that's not baseball !!

Pop Gear

Let me start by saying that I went through all my old vids and maybe only one or two weren't on YouTube already.

Having said that, I recently watched Pop Gear again. This movie has some phenomenally oddball performances. Annnnnd....90% of them were in fact on YouTube. So- I gleaned 'em and here's a bunch well worth a look.

It's introduced by Jimmy Savile - possibly king of the jerkoffs. (Okay, okay, great guy etc., etc.- but hey I ain't English!)

HOWEVER- first up is something from that film that wasn't on YouTube: the gold pants dance sequence - if you like gold pants like I do, then this video is for you. You're welcome for the upload, massive fan base!

Comes next, (as my son used to say when he was a baby) is the Honeycombs singing Have I the Right, which is notable for two reasons:
The friggin' mentally-challenged-cousin-type on rhythm guitar, and the fact that the drummer, I'm pretty sure, is a dude in drag....

Tommy Quickly gives a performance of Humpty Dumpty that can only be described as excruciating. I want to punch his face off every time I see it. If I didn't have such a nice TV, I might punch it. This video infuriates me so.......

I'm punching you in my mind Tommy Quickly! In fact, I'm punching punching itself!!

UPDATE could this be another version of a sort of cultural idiom? Help me, massive fan base!!!

The Four Pennies doing Where Did you Sleep Last Night ain't no Leadbelly, but their interpretation is such a screamingly loud (for the era) go at it, sort of an end-of-folk-Dylan-at-Isle-of-Wight event, that it's quite enjoyable.

Billie Davis singing Whatcha Gonna Do? is like watching a live Thunderbirds character singing. Exquisite. Dee-lish. Helium-y. Puppet - puppet - puppet.

Steve Winwood in the Spencer Davis Group stands as exemplar of some of the great performances from this film (The Animals, Herman's Hermits, et al) so I'm including it.

Last is the creepy butt dance being done by the Roger Daltrey clone in this performance of Tobacco Road by the Nashville Teens (whatta name!) The Butt dance is mesmerizing in a scoliosis/back brace/uncontrolled intestinal problem kinda way. The performance is good tho.

All the great performances, with the exception of Matt Munro, a super boring lounge singer, will be watched over and over by me.

The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.

I've been sitting on this for a while now (so it's nice and flat) because I was worried about too much comics stuff, but the PCL Linkdump (where I contribute) put up the Girl From U.N.C.L.E. Soundtrack and I decided it was time....

So, here (and at the image) is the Girl From U.N.C.L.E. Comic!!

It also got me thinking about a friend I had when I first got married who loved the Man From U.N.C.L.E. He writes movie scripts and has a blog- go see it: The World of Wolcott Wheeler. He's got a dark vision!

Every U.N.C.L.E. story was referred to as an "Affair" this use of euphemism reminded me of this routine by the great Mitchell & Webb:
