Back when I sold cable-TV I got to a house with an old man who was dying- it turned out he used to be chaplain in a prison and one of the prisoners made this lamp of plexiglass and gave it to him as a gift; his daughter gave it to me as a sort of consolation prize.

I am now a Dong. Best I've looked in ages. Artifact firm installation by Song Dong at Yerba Buena Center- from their site: "The exhibition also features a selection of the artist's videos, photographs and a newly commissioned work. Collectively, the works create a longitudinal portrait of Song Dong's use of art as a way to form closer bonds with his mother and father, as well as his siblings, wife and daughter, and to express the power of the family as a social unit."
He allows patrons to merge their image with any of his family members in a video process - I, tellingly chose to be the father.

Micheangelo Pistoletto in Philadelphia

So, Michelangelo Pistoletto. I had no idea what to expect. I had heard my wife's recounting of a review in our local paper, Today's Sunbeam, but aside form that I just knew something interesting was going to be at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I won't attempt to play art critic, but I was knocked out by the installation. His Wikipedia entry states: "His work mainly deals with the subject matter of reflection and the unification of art and everyday life in terms of a Gesamtkunstwerk." and it's the whole immersion effect from that gesamtkunstwerk (if you read that entry) that grabs you. There's a lot of .... Italian 60's zeitgeisty vibe. I felt like I was in early Fellini or Antonioni Land, yet any of the works could've been considered contemporary (maybe because art is dead?). Polished steel mirrors with either silkscreened or painted-on-tissue then applied images, and assemblages that were just overwhelming in how they captured domestic vs. of-the-outside-world existence. All of it was gut level - no emperor's clothes or intellectually abstruse concept puzzles. It was just - wow. If he shows up in your city - go.

Speaking of museums of niche interest, while I was connecting at SFO twice last month or saw I beheld the tools of early automated illegal gambling - aka slot machines.

Let me say I detest casinos. They suck. Name anything about them, it sucks even if it's like, say R.E.M. playing the Borgata - they then suck, and so on....

But these early gambling appliances were fascinating- ingenious in their configuration, metalcraft, and design. And next time I'm back on the left coast (which is quite often now) I'm goin' to Big Joe Welch's American Antique Slot Machine Museum, in San Bruno, where 90% of these came from and somewhat fittingly, does not have a website.

Artist Josh Ellingson has taken quite a few better photos than I of some of the machines, mainly because I used my cell phone, so tough.

I was particularly worked up about the art on the punch boards - a form of gambling apparently still in use legally in Washington State in the form of "Pull Tabs"

One Man's Obsession

Steven Hills Movie Title Pages. Just....endless, hundreds, assloads of movie title screens. Has to be seen to:
A: Be believed
B: Be appreciated
let's face it - this stuff is an impact making few seconds of any film (for instance, in my house we say, "Cartoon opening; good movie." - think about it - it's true) and Senor Hill has made it his mission, with just a hint of "WTF?!?"

Through a Google search we found some great images on your site www.glyphjockey.com and wondered about conditions of using images as outlined below.

My colleague and I have an organisation (in Melbourne Australia) that provides training for workers and families with a person with brain injury.

Some of the images on your site would be perfect to illustrate aspects of working with people with brain injury. If we were to use it we would use it on a Power point slide and in handouts provided to participants attending our workshop.

Can you shed any light on whether we are able to use the images and what conditions there are on use.

Need I elucidate that when someone finally has a legitimate use for my images it's to help illustrate aspects of working with people with brain injuries? While I am happy to help, and kudos to these folks for choosing such a challenging field, the irony is not lost on me.
