Azafran!

My wife just got an ounce of Saffron. I couldn't let the packaging escape my perusal.

Unfortunately, in our highway-to-global-warming world, I'll still buy something if the packaging is really cool.....

They took the time to include the product name in Hindi, Urdu and Arabic, (I'm guessing)

This one came with the saffron bagged for freshness:

The aroma was serene yet challenging, and helped define it as an ingredient in the risotto the Mrs. was preparing...

If you'd like to smell it, just scratch here.

This end of the tin had an intersting message:

(The pic is a link to a wallpaper)

Pickers on the other end:

It's brand is altaj which means "the crown"

The proud Spanish family that provides this rare treat:

...and their feelings about their product:

Wade in the Water

Jeeeeezus!

This is almost too hard to take - I saw it a while ago on Turner Classic Movies and was astounded by Judy Henske's overarching delivery and her (shudder) "in touch" persona. It's "A Mighty Wind" for real. Bleagh - folk.

Three final thoughts:
Judy Henske was the real Annie Hall.
How 'bout that damn haircut she's sportin' real "grassroots/of the people" meets Bettie Page.
She does a horrifying curtsy in the end that's been cut out- sorry (not my upload).

Paud Rig - Expeller of Toads

Lex10's people, half of them, came from the Old Sod in the 19th century.

Oh boy! I hope I meet an Irishman-from-Ireland so he can remind me that this is really completely MEANINGLESS holiday to the Irish......they just love doing that!

Please no emails from 1800 hours -5 GMT until 2000 hours. I'll be watching Darby O'Gill and the Little People.

Bloody Hell! It's caused me to add a whole new page a' me Amazon Store!

Cartes-Postale from the GlyphJockey collection. All originals.

Ah, the joys of being Irish - why curtail your ire, express it on a Holiday greeting?

This one's exquisite in big. Oh yeah, as is often the case here at GlyphJockey, most pix link to bigger versions

Man! I want that Font!

AND finally, a loovely wallpaper in the link at the picture below.....

Mom's Death Day

Beware the ides of March.
March seems like a death month. Ya just can't seem to make it - winter's almost over, spring's a-comin'.... there's hope, but.......

So, Mom had a lot of zing. Hopefully it will be apparent from these two images.
Hail Chicago.
Her mother died in an asylum of TB in 1918.
Born before radio.

Cowboys rounding up escaped cattle from the stockyards, in the middle of Michigan Avenue.
Enjoying spooners of beer in the basement ofFrank McNichols' father's brewery.
Helping her boss hide from bill collectors in the Carson Pirie Scott Building during the depression, when, if you found a really good piece of cardboard, you were happy, because you could put in your shoe, and block up the hole in it (corroborated by my father, who grew up 1000 miles away and had the same experience)

Corrupted, print deconstructed, appreciated JMW Turner

Okay. trying to be deep while Tracy Morgan makes me pee.

I was in St. Andrews long ago and bought a card game about art to shore up the paintings in Masterpiece - never really used them for that though - more like a cool artifact.

There's a Turner in there , and if you've never seen a Turner you've really missed something. He's like a mental patient - about 10 lbs. of paint on a 1 lb. canvas in an Asperger's Syndrome frenzy of making the scene come alive and be real.

So I chose that Turner for those cards and blew it up. It was printed in 4 color process so tightly, that I had to scan it at 2400 dpi to get the thang I was looking to do:

From the original image:

"The Fighting Temeraire"

So- I have put a wallpaper here and at the "corrupted" image for your desktop environment, 'cause I love you, bunkies.

Lastly, I'll say it again: Turner's the man.

Rockin' and Romance with the Modern Lovers

Lost and rare out of print. From Cassette

"Chewing Gum Wrapper" is, I think, my Theme Song.....

Now a quick note on this widget- Box.net won't show up @ work, so I wrote to them and after 2 or 3 questions, they gave up. I tried to point out that "seeing a nothing" will not elicit an email to them asking why because there's nothing there, but oh well, whaddya want for web2.0 free?

So, Box.net was the best, but if I can't share with myself, what's the point. If you know of a widget that is effective with flexible ID3 tags & is stable - or can get me to fix my network so I can see the Box.net widget again, let me know, thanks.

In the meantime, rock on.

Little Town

These images come from a book with the same name as this post. I bought it at a flea market or some place and owing to my parental guilt for being on the road, went over it in great detail with my tiny son. We got to see the world that is gone, yet familiar. He understood, and all my children understand.

The book is by Berta and Elmer Hadler (who knew?- a Wikipedia link.) and published by MacMillan in 1941, dedicated to Gayle. This apparently was their schtick, being Caldecott winners.

The activities happening in a small town (not unlike mine) are described with illustrations containing a plethora of visual features as accompaniment.

It's another world.

Another World, I say.

Crap Nancy 1

Hey, Dell comics are good comics.......they insist every issue.

I don't know who did this but it's not Bushmiller, more like his beatnik nephew or something....

link@pic link@pic link@pic link@pic link@pic link@pic

link@pic link@pic link@pic link@pic link@pic link@pic

But, y'know, Nancy looked like this pretty much for much of my later childhood I guess.

My favorite thing is that the first bug she sees is a house centipede.

Behold the Deliciousness of the White Rabbit

If you have a Chinese, Vietnamese, or Phillippine grocery near you, you can probably get these. They are delicious "Milk Candy" which touches your brain, via your hypnotized tongue, neurologically when you eat 'em.

Picture above is a link to a lovely White Rabbit WALLPAPER

Here's the bag for easy identification.

Individually wrapped in a great label.

Each one comes wrapped- inside the outer wrapping - with edible paper, presumably to keep the wrapper from sticking.

Lastly, I'll say that I am the type of person that is so affected by design, the I might eat these merely because of the coolness of the packaging.... it's not right, but it's me.

While I am in fact unconcerned whether or not you actually buy these, having earned $1.91 since it's opening, here's a handy link within my charming and well-outfitted Amazon Store:

Lex10's favorite stuff all in one place! New goodies added all the time! A morally bereft, due to greed, blog analog!

1,2,3,4,5,6! Roadrunner, Roadrunner!

Rare out-of-print & unavailable vinyl, produced by Kim Fowley (who, astoundingly enough, produced "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaaaa!) prior to the John Cale Produced effort that ended up being a beacon of light in the Eagles, Grateful Dead and Boston poisoned musical times in which it was released.

Demo reel sound, Richman's really overselling the drama, but it classic Modern Lovers with songs that never made it to the final incarnation of the first Modern Lovers Album.

Placeholder in Your Fevered Brain

Picture it: You're 8, you've got the flu, and your lying there, with only this beaten up coverless comic within reach. The content is dreary, like Ozzie & Harriet only with animals, but you read on, because it's all you're capable of.

Out of your haze an alternate reality arises, gels, and becomes real. The ape dad is your Dad, the little bear is your pal, Kenny, and the little girl is either your sister or Judy from up the street. You're now walking around in the comic, they are talking to you.

You exist there.

You've escaped. It's all an illusion. Hold on to that.
